
Fingers grazed the grass, waiting for a sign of life beneath the ruddy dark soil. Nails coated with earth, the scent of the forest played inside her nose. She awaited his appearance, even tapped on the ground. One tap, stop—three knocks in a row. A gleeful crease to her lips, even the cat would be jealous of the width. Sighing, she waited until the screams began. “Alice, where have you gone today,” they demanded. “If we find you, there will be consequences again,” another added. Rolling over, knees scraped, her eyes playing tricks on her as a dash of white disappeared in the distance.
